Audi R8 V10 plus 2016

Audi R8 V10 Plus - front trackingAudi’s luscious R8 is beautiful to behold, easy to live with, and simply marvelous to drive—all the qualities you could want in a supercar. All-new for 2016, this generation is more powerful than ever. The base engine is a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 that makes 540 hp; the V10 Plus makes 610 hp. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a seven-speed automatic. Only a coupe is offered for now; expect a roadster later in the year, along with either a turbocharged V-6 or turbo inline-five.

Ferrari Says V-6s coming soon.

2016-Ferrari-488-Spider-PLACEMENT
Ferrari debuted the 488 Spider (shown above), the folding-hardtop-equipped variant of the new 488GTB, at the Frankfurt auto show this week. The two new 488 models are emblematic of Ferrari’s changing strategy in the face of increasingly demanding fuel-economy and emissions regulations, as they have a smaller-displacement, twin-turbo V-8 where once there was a shrieking naturally aspirated engine. At a private media meeting that we attended in the Ferrari booth in Frankfurt, we learned about some of Ferrari’s next big plans. The short answer: Smaller engines are in and manual transmissions are out.
Asked by another attending journalist about the possibility of a V-6 engine in a future Ferrari, CEO Amedeo Felisa answered with what amounts to a definite maybe. “What we are doing right now is following a path to reduce emissions,” Felisa said. “For sure, the downsizing of the displacement is one of the ways you can get to that result. [As for] the six-cylinder, will it be beneficial? Probably yes, but I think we have a good path before going to that specific solution.” When asked if such a hypothetical V-6 Ferrari would be a smaller vehicle, Felisa quipped, “Why would you reduce the engine and make a bigger car?” This ostensibly would be the much-rumored sub-488 car, which may resurrect the Dino nameplate.
Later, Felisa was asked about the possibility of future manual-transmission models in the Ferrari lineup. The exotic carmaker’s response: “Never say no, but today we’ll say no. We have the fastest [automated] gearbox in the market . . . right now, we are not thinking of a manual gearbox.” CEO Felisa continued: “The last Ferrari with a manual gearbox has been the California. We sold three. Which, by the way, the ones that were bought were a fantastic investment. But the client demand was very minimal."

Finally, on the topic of whether today’s Ferrari buyer enjoys driving, in the purist sense, the same way that a Ferrari owner did 10 or 20 years ago, Felisa opined, “Yes, in the sense that [. . .] when they buy a Ferrari, they’re looking for emotion. If you look at the evolution of the last 15 years, if you compare the 360 with the 488, the car is totally different. And what we have tried to do is not to ask of the customer a higher level of skill in order to drive these cars. It’s incredible the way we are improving the power, [but we're] not asking the drivers to be specialists or professionals. I think this was the big challenge that the engineers had.”ansmissions Are Dead.

Mercedes-Benz Planning Fully Electric Crossover SUV

Mercedes-Benz S550e Plug-in Hybrid Sedan
Mercedes-Benz will launch an upmarket, fully electric vehicle, R&D board member Thomas Weber stated in an interview with Car and Driver. “I confirm that we will make a fully electric car with a range between of 250 to over 300 miles,” Weber said.
He did not provide details, but said that it would “not be a competitor of any of our current electric offerings. It won’t be a Smart, it won’t be the next B-class [Electric Drive], and it also won’t be a sports car like the SLS Electric Drive.” He hinted that the car would be a crossover SUV, pointing out that “sedans are not particulary well suited to storing large battery packs.
Weber added that the car will be “cool and emotional.” We expect the fully electric crossover to be a standalone vehicle, separate from any current Mercedes-Benz model line. It will compete with the upcoming Audi Q6 and the Tesla Model X. The new car will join Benz’s expanding lineup of plug-in hybrids, which includes versions of the GLE-classthe C-class, and the S-class.

2016 Infiniti QX50

2016 Infiniti QX50 Priced: More Length for Less MoneyNow here’s something you don’t see too often: a carmaker refreshing a model—and giving the fresh ride a lower price than its predecessor. Such is the case with the 2016 Infiniti QX50, which was given a longer wheelbase and, well, not much else relative to its 2015-model-year equivalent but costs $550 less. (You may know this model better by its old EX badge, although given its low sales, maybe not.)

Starting at $35,445, the base, rear-wheel-drive 2016 QX50 is not only longer but better-equipped, too, with a standard sunroof and heated seats front and rear. Like last year, all-wheel drive will cost QX50 buyers an extra $1400. Unlike last year, the Premium package is available on all QX50s—before, all packages were restricted to the now-dead uplevel Journey trim—and sees a price drop to just $500. (It includes an 11-speaker Bose audio system, a power tilting/telescoping steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and used to cost $3050, albeit with navigation and a touch screen included.) A $2000 Premium Plus package augments the Premium gear, and brings Bluetooth audio streaming, navigation, Infiniti’s Around View parking camera system, and parking sensors.

Constant use of social media technology causes teen anxiety and depression

A study by the British Psychological Society warns that constant pressure on teenagers to use social media technology causes lower sleep quality, lower self-esteem, higher anxiety and increased depression levels.

The need to be constantly available and respond 24/7 on social media accounts can cause depression, anxiety and reduced sleep quality for teenagers, says a study presented yesterday at a British Psychological Society conference in Manchester.

The researchers, Dr Heather Cleland Woods and Holly Scott of the University of Glasgow, provided questionnaires for 467 teenagers regarding their overall and night-time specific social media use. A further set of tests measured sleep quality, self-esteem, anxiety, depression and emotional investment in social media which relates to the pressure felt to be available 24/7 and the anxiety around, for example, not responding immediately to texts or posts.

Dr Cleland Woods explained: "Adolescence can be a period of increased vulnerability for the onset of depression and anxiety, and poor sleep quality may contribute to this. It is important that we understand how social media use relates to these. Evidence is increasingly supporting a link between social media use and wellbeing, particularly during adolescence, but the causes of this are unclear."

Analysis showed that overall and night-time specific social media use along with emotional investment were related to poorer sleep quality, lower self-esteem as well as higher anxiety and depression levels.
Lead researcher Dr Cleland Woods said: "While overall social media use impacts on sleep quality, those who log on at night appear to be particularly affected. This may be mostly true of individuals who are highly emotionally invested. This means we have to think about how our kids use social media, in relation to time for switching off."

Last year, a similar study found that increased use of digital media is causing children's social skills to decline.

'Ghost In The Shell: First Assault' Could Be The Game Fans Have Been Waiting For

The Nexon published PC game Ghost in the Shell: First Assault, previously known as Ghost in the Shell Online, is gearing up for its release next year. Not only with a new gameplay trailer but also a closed beta.
Based on the Stand Alone Complex branch of the series, the game is being developed by Neople.
A somewhat standard first-person shooter, the game also leverages much of Ghost in the Shell’s cyberpunk heritage.
This means you can use things like thermoptic camouflage, which renders its wearer invisible, as well as inbuilt cyborg based weaponry such as blades and rocket launchers. This will be a freemium game but it’s looking good and as such I am actually excited for it.Bar the original Ghost in the Shell PlayStation game, that was based on the original manga and had you pilot a Fuchikoma, the series hasn’t had many decent games in its history.

This being an obvious shame, as Ghost in the Shell is a rich and interesting series. It looks like Nexon may have pulled it off though and that is both surprising and fantastic to see.The latest trailer (shown below) also has an English voice-over as well as using Imagine Dragons’ Radioactive in the background.

A BMW-POWERED, MCLAREN-BASED SUPERCAR COULD BE JUST A FEW SHORT YEARS AWAY

The iconic McLaren F1 that was introduced at the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix was powered by a BMW-sourced 6.1-liter V12 engine. The two partners haven’t collaborated since, but a new report coming out of England finds they’ll team up once again to build a new supercar before the end of the decade.

The yet-unnamed model will allegedly take the form of a sleek, two-seater mid-engined coupe that will share its carbon fiber monocoque with the McLaren P16, the model that will replace the 650S. While the P16 will use McLaren-sourced engines and transmissions, BMW’s version of the car will be powered by a mid-mounted 4.0-liter V8 that will use four turbochargers — two exhaust-driven units and two electric units — to produce at least 750 horsepower.

The two cars will be built on the same bones, and they will share most brake, suspension and steering components, but they will not look anything alike when parked next to each other. Similarly, BMW will design a brand-specific interior for its car. The two car makers are going to great lengths to avoid ending up with a pair of twins like the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S.

BMW’s bean counters like the idea of splitting development costs with another car maker, but insiders warn that the project hasn’t been given the green light for production yet because talks are still on-going. However, if everything goes according to plan, the supercar will greet the public for the first time at the 2017 edition of the Frankfurt Motor Show.

HONDA'S 2016 CIVIC GETS SLICK STYLING,MORE TECH, AND A TURBO

Think about Honda, or compact cars in general, and it’s hard not to picture the Civic. This earnestly-named model helped establish Honda’s reputation worldwide, and has become something of a Platonic archetype for small cars. Now, it’s entering its 10th generation.

The 2016 Honda Civic sedan was unveiled at an event in Los Angeles, and goes on sale in the U.S. this fall. It will eventually be followed by coupe and five-door hatchback body styles, plus sporty Si and Type-R models. The latter will be appearing in U.S. showrooms for the first time.

The production Civic maintains quite a few of the styling cues from the Civic concept that appeared at the 2015 New York Auto Show, giving it a much more stylish appearance than the current model. At the front, there’s a massive grille similar to the ones added to the recently-refreshed CR-V and Accord, and the cabin is shifted backwards, making for a more dramatic, long-hooded silhouette.

Bulging wheel arches and sculpted sides give the Civic a more muscular appearance than one would normally expect from an economy car. Standard LED daytime running lights and C-shaped taillights add some more flair. Full LED headlights are optional.

Underneath the reworked sheetmetal, the Civic gets two all-new engines. Base models will get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with Honda’s i-VTEC variable valve timing system. Honda won’t discuss specifications, but it claims this engine is the most powerful ever fitted to a base-model Civic.
The Civic’s optional engine will be a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, the first turbo engine ever offered in a non-Si Civic in the U.S. The naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter engine will be offered with either six-speed manual or CVT automatic transmissions; the 1.5-liter turbo will be automatic only.
In addition to a restyled body and new powertrains, the 2016 Civic gets a tech upgrade as well. It will be offered with a Display Audio system and 7.0-inch touchscreen similar to the one that debuted in the 2016 AccordApple CarPlay and Android Auto will be available as well.

The 2016 Civic will also be offered with the Honda Sensing suite of electronic safety systems, including Collision Mitigation Braking, Road Departure Mitigation, and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow.
Honda says it’s looking to position the Civic on the premium side of the compact spectrum, so it tried to spruce up the cabin with a soft-touch dashboard, available TFT information display, and LED lighting elements. The driver also sits lower for a sportier feel, and Honda claims the Civic sedan has the most spacious cabin in its class.

Northern California fire destroys 400 homes, businesses

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. (AP) — Two of California's fastest-burning wildfires in decades overtook several Northern California towns, killing at least one person and destroying hundreds of homes and businesses and sending thousands of residents fleeing highways lined with buildings, guardrails and cars still in flames.

The devastation comes after a separate wildfire to the southeast destroyed at least 81 homes.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection confirmed one fatality in the wildfire north of San Francisco that raced through dry brush and exploded in size within hours. Officials also counted 400 homes, two apartment complexes and 10 businesses destroyed by the flames, department spokeswoman Lynn Valentine said.
Residents fled from Middletown, dodging smoldering telephone poles, downed power lines and fallen trees as they drove through billowing smoke.
Whole blocks of houses were burned in parts of the town of more than 1,000 residents that lies about 20 miles north of the famed Napa Valley. On the west side of town, house after house was burned to their foundations, with only charred appliances and twisted metal garage doors still recognizable.
Firefighters on Sunday afternoon could be seen driving around flaming utility poles to put out spot fires. Homeowner Justin Galvin, 33, himself a firefighter, stood alone at his house, poking its shin-high, smoking ruins with a piece of scrap metal.
"This is my home. Or it was," said Galvin, who spent all night fighting another massive fire in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Valentine said most of the destruction occurred in Middletown and Hidden Valley Lake, as well as numerous homes along a shuttered state highway.
Wind gusts that reached up to 30 miles per hour sent embers raining down on homes and made it hard for firefighters to stop the Lake County blaze from advancing, California Department of Forest Protection spokesman Daniel Berlant said.
Four firefighters who are members of a helicopter crew suffered second-degree burns during the initial attack on the fire Saturday afternoon. They remained hospitalized in stable condition Sunday, Berlant said.
There's no official tally of the destruction yet because firefighters are focused on new evacuation orders and on residents' safety, he said.
People were ordered Sunday to evacuate a stretch along Highway 281, including Clear Lake Riviera, a town with about 3,000 residents, Cal Fire said.
George Escalona told The Associated Press that in some areas of town "there is nothing but burned houses, burned cars," adding that all he had left were the clothes he was wearing.
The 78-square-mile fire erupted Saturday afternoon and rapidly chewed through brush and trees parched from several years of drought. Entire towns as well as residents along a 35-mile stretch of State Route 29 were evacuated. Gov. Jerry Brown on Sunday declared a state of emergency to free up resources.
Brown had already declared a state of emergency for a separate 102-square-mile wildfire about 70 miles southeast of Sacramento that has destroyed at least 81 homes and turned the grassy, tree-studded Sierra Nevada foothills an eerie white.
Fire officials had earlier counted 86 homes destroyed, but issued the new figure Sunday morning. Crews increased containment on that blaze to 25 percent.
The fire, which broke out on Wednesday, was threatening about 6,400 more buildings.
Mark Ghilarducci, director of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services, said this summer's fires are the most volatile he has seen in 30 years of emergency response work. The main cause behind the fast-spreading fires is dry conditions from the four-year drought, he said.
"The bushes, the trees have absolutely no moisture in them, and the humidities are so low that we are seeing these 'fire starts' just erupt into conflagrations," Ghilarducci said, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Lake County saw devastation in just the last two months. In late July, a wildfire east of Clear Lake destroyed 43 homes as it spread across 109 square miles. As firefighters drew close to surrounding that blaze, another fire erupted several miles from the community of Lower Lake on Aug. 9 and more than doubled in size overnight.
Residents in the area had to evacuate from their homes two times in as many weeks.
East of Fresno, the largest wildfire in the state continued to march westward and away from the Giant Sequoia trees, fire spokesman Dave Schmitt said. The fire, which was sparked by lightning on July 31, has charred 203 square miles and was 31 percent contained Sunday, the U.S. Forest Service said.
Firefighters have maintained a precautionary line around Grant Grove, an ancient grove of Giant Sequoia trees, and set prescribed burns to keep the flames from overrunning it.
Some fire came through the area but it hasn't done much harm, fire spokesman Frank Mosbacher told the Fresno Bee.
The grove is named for the towering General Grant tree that stands 268 feet tall. There are dozens of Sequoia groves in the Sierra Nevada, and some trees are 3,000 years old.
